Kole Calhoun hit a tiebreaking homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, lifting the Los Angeles Angels to a 4-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday afternoon in Anaheim, Calif.

Calhoun halted his 0-for-25 skid when he drove a full-count cutter from Nick Vincent (3-4) over the center field fence. It was Calhoun's 19th homer, first since Sept. 1 and fourth against the Mariners this year.

The Angels (74-76) avoided getting swept at home in a four-game series to Seattle for the first time since July 9-12, 2005.

The homer also denied the Mariners (82-67) a chance to gain ground in their fading wild-card hopes. Seattle remained 7 1/2 games behind Oakland for the second American League wild-card spot, and its magic number for elimination from the race is six.

Taylor Cole (2-2) pitched two perfect innings, and Justin Anderson induced a double-play ball from Denard Span in a scoreless eighth.

Ty Buttrey struck out the side on 16 pitches in the ninth and recorded his third save.

Seattle took a 1-0 lead with one out in the third when Mitch Haniger lined his 34th double of the season to left field, scoring Dee Gordon from first. The Angels took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the inning when Justin Upton hit a 2-1 changeup off Marco Gonzales over the center field fence.

It was Upton's 30th homer and marked the third straight season the left fielder reached the mark.

Seattle tied the game with one out in the fourth when Daniel Vogelbach hit a two-run homer into the right-center-field seats.

In his sixth start this year against the Angels, Gonzales allowed three runs and six hits in five innings. Jaime Barria also allowed three runs and six hits in five innings for Los Angeles.

Angels infielder David Fletcher exited the game in the first inning with a strained left hamstring. He was injured running to second base on a double.
