Toronto right-hander Jacob Waguespack, also making his second career major league start, allowed three runs and nine hits while striking out seven in 5 1/3 innings.

The Tigers scored in the second. Brandon Dixon singled, Niko Goodrum doubled and Christin Stewart was hit by a pitch. Dixon scored when Bobby Wilson grounded into a double play.

Detroit took the lead in the third. Jones singled, took third on a double by Castellanos and scored on a groundout to first by Jeimer Candelario.

Jones made a superb catch at the wall in center field on Brandon Drury in the top of the fifth, then hit his 10th homer this season in the bottom of the fifth.

Waguespack allowed two singles and had a strikeout in the sixth before being replaced by Joe Biagini, who got the final two outs, one with a strikeout. Biagini pitched a perfect seventh with two strikeouts.

Joe Jimenez replaced Alexander and pitched a perfect eighth with two strikeouts.

Toronto's Derek Law pitched around a leadoff double and an intentional walk in the bottom of the eighth.

Greene's throwing error on Eric Sogard's bunt led off the top of the ninth. With one out, Gurriel hit his 18th homer this season to tie the score.

Toronto's David Phelps pitched around a ninth-inning single.

Teoscar Hernandez led off the 10th with a double against Ramirez. But Hernandez was doubled off second on Danny Jansen's bloop to shortstop to end the inning.
