Jake Odorizzi picked up his career-high 12th win of the season Tuesday night as the Minnesota Twins defeated the host Miami Marlins 2-1.
Odorizzi (12-5), who won 11 games in 2014, held Miami to four hits, one walk and one run in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out five batters and lasted 103 pitches.
The Twins got scoreless pitching from three relievers, including Tyler Duffey, who subbed in for Odorizzi and got four outs. Sergio Romo, acquired from the Marlins on Saturday, made his Twins debut by pitching a scoreless eighth inning. And Taylor Rogers pitched the ninth for his 16th save.
First baseman Garrett Cooper, who leads the Marlins in batting average (.294), left the game in the third inning due to tight left hamstring. Cooper was replaced in the lineup by Martin Prado, who took over at third base with Neil Walker moving to first.
Marlins rookie right-hander Zac Gallen (1-3) took a tough loss, allowing just four hits, three walks and two runs in seven innings, striking out eight. Gallen, who has a 2.72 ERA in seven starts, has struck out 17 batters in his past two outings.
Minnesota, which entered the game leading the majors in home runs, used the long ball to open the scoring. Byron Buxton became the 11th Twins player to reach double figures in homers this year when he hit the first pitch -- a knuckle curve -- over the fence in left with one out in the third.
The Twins took a 2-0 lead in the fourth as Miguel Sano smacked an RBI double that hit the wall in left-center on one hop. The blast was clocked at 112 mph, and it allowed Eddie Rosario -- running hard with two outs -- to race home from first base.
Miami cut its deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs and none on, Starlin Castro singled and then scored when Curtis Granderson pulled a double down the first-base line.
However, the Marlins went hitless over their final five innings.
