Jonathan Marchessault had two goals and two assists, and Reilly Smith had a goal and three assists to lead the visiting Vegas Golden Knights to a 7-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Monday night.

William Karlsson added a goal and an assist, and Mark Stone, Paul Stastny and Cody Eakin also scored goals for Vegas, which won for the ninth time in 10 games. The Golden Knights closed to within seven points of the second-place Sharks in the Pacific Division. Both teams have nine games remaining.

Marchessault and Smith became just the third and fourth players in franchise history to record four points in a game.

Vegas goalie Malcolm Subban, playing in back-to-back games for the first time in his career with Marc-Andre Fleury sidelined due to a lower-body injury, made 36 saves.

Logan Couture scored two goals and Joe Thornton also scored for San Jose, which remained one point short of becoming the second team in the Western Conference to clinch a playoff berth.

The Sharks, who remain a point behind first-place Calgary, sustained their third consecutive regulation loss -- all at home. The only other time San Jose lost three in a row in regulation this season, all three were on the road in mid-January.

Aaron Dell, who entered the game midway through the first period after starting Sharks goalie Martin Jones gave up three goals on 11 shots, stopped 27 of the 30 shots he faced.

The first period featured five goals in the first 12:24 as Vegas took a 3-2 lead.

Couture opened the scoring with his 25th goal of the season and 500th career point just 30 seconds into the game. Karlsson and Stone quickly answered with goals just 2:11 apart to give the Golden Knights a 2-1 lead.

Thornton tied it with an unassisted goal at 9:54.

Marchessault put Vegas ahead for good 2 1/2 minutes later when he fired in a bad-angle wrist shot from the bottom of the right circle, chasing Jones.

Stastny increased the Vegas lead to 4-2 with a power-play goal midway through the second period.

Smith, who assisted on the Golden Knights' first three goals, scored 43 seconds into the third period off a no-look pass from Karlsson to up the lead to three goals.

Couture scored a power-play goal with 9:05 remaining to cut it to 5-3, but Marchessault sealed it with an empty-net goal with 2:21 to go. Eakin followed with a power-play goal, with 1:38 left to end the scoring.
